FREIGHT SHIPPING SERVICES

Freight shipping is the process of transporting commodities, goods and cargo by land, sea or air. Common types of freight shipping over the road include truckload, less than truckload (LTL) and intermodal. Freight itself can be defined as the goods transported by truck, train, ship or plane.

What is the difference between LTL and full truckload shipping?

Full truckload shipping is for shippers that have enough cargo to fill an entire trailer and the pickup or delivery time is important to hit. LTL (less than truckload) shipping is for shippers with a cargo load that won’t fill an entire trailer and the loading and delivery times are flexible. Generally, full truckload is faster than LTL because the shipment goes directly to its destination whereas LTL shipments will make multiple stops before reaching the drop-off location.

How much weight can a truck carry?

The average weight a driver of a truck and trailer combination is comfortable hauling is generally between 42,000 and 44,000 pounds. Dry vans are able to carry up to 45,000 pounds. For a full truckload shipment, it’s best to ask the carrier the weight capacity of the trailer to make sure you won’t be going over it with your shipment.

How many pallets can a truck carry?

A truck can carry up to 30 standard pallets safely. Standard pallets are usually measured at 40” x 48”. Other pallets can be larger and require more advanced planning for full truckload shipping.
